SOME DOG HEROES
Honours have boon awarded twelve dog heroes for performing distinguished feats of valour in New York, says the ‘ Christian Science Monitor.’ The ceremonies marked the conclusion of the fourth anfeual Kindness-to-animals Week in the American metropolis. The dogs, ranging from police dogs to a toy Pomeranian, were decorated with silver medals, offered by the New York Anti-Vivisection Society and presented by Mrs Diana Belais, president of the organisation. The dogs were also made members of the Legion of Hero Dogs, established last year for those ranking high in courage and intelligence. Trixie, a one-year-old German shep-herd-dog, won a medal for saving her master by driving off three holdup men as they fired four bullets into his body in West Eightieth street two weeks before. She then chased the robbers as they sped away in an automobile. Hobo, whose pedigree, is uncertain, but who proves his worth by his deeds, was honoured for barking until aid came to jus boy-owner sinking in a quicksand in New Jersey, Lucky Lindy a small bulldog, was rewarded for saying a friend of bis master who bad fallen through the ice on a pond in Ridgefield, Now Jersey. Jimmie, a Boston bull, saved her mistress from gas asphyxiation when a pot boiled over and extingiiished the flumes of a gas stove. Tugging at her mistress, wbc became drowsy from the fumes, Jimmie aroused her to escape. Prince, a Gordon setter, was honoured for saving the lives of five persons in a (ire. Finding the diningroom and kitchen ablaze, lie ran upstairs, jumped on to the beds and barked to arouse the family. Jumbo a, mixed-breed police dogr gave an alarm by barking when a burglar attemped 'to break into his master’s home.
