ASSISTANCE TO THE UNEMPLOYED

DISTRIBUTION OF GIFT PARCELS

By the steamer Holmdale this morning there arrived 600 sheeps’ carcases from Wellington, which the Government has allocated to bo distributed among the unemployed in Dunedin. The mayor (Mr R. S. Black) stated that 90 carcases were to be given to the Returned Soldiers’ Association for distribution among returned soldier members of the unemployed, 35 to the Central Mission, and also a number to the Salvation Army and. other organisations.

Three tons of new potatoes, 2,000 loaves of bread, tea, butter, sugar, and jellies have been purchased for distribution by the St. Andrew street depot, which is at present a hive of industry. The voluntary workers are busily engaged in making up parcels which will bo distributed at the depot to-morrow. The carcases of sheep are being, cut up and will be distributed to the unemployed to-morrow. The St. Andrew street depot will be open from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. tomorrow, from 1.30 p.m. to 6 pan., and from 7to 9 p.m. It is hoped to handle 150 people an hour, and all who can do so are asked to come as early as possible. The mayor stated that it was anticipated some 1,100 .men would participate in the gift parcel scheme at the St. Andrew street depot, the Returned Soldiers’ Association is dealing with another 753, the Rotary Club with 130, and the Central Mission with 260, while the Salvation Army will provide dinner and tea for unemployed single men on Christmas Eve. The St. Andrew street depot will be open again on Wednesday.
