The Christmas season was in evidence during last week 'owing to the school break-up and functions held for children. The Presbyterian Church Sunday school held its Christmas-tree evening on Friday. Miss M’Gaulay had charge of the arrangements, and many children and friends attended. Father Christmas paid his annual visit and distributed toys, sweets, etc., to a large number of youngsters. Saturday proved a red-letter* day again for the youngsters of tho district. The local Orphans’ Club lias always provided a Christmas' treat, and this year’s gathering of children and grown-ups will long /be remembered. The hall bad been 'beautifully decorated by Mr J. Niven, sen'., and one and all were delighted with its appearance. A large Christmas tree in the centre was loaded with all sorts of presents, and the arrangements made by the club for distribution to over 200 children were entirely satisfactory. Father Christmas made a very dignified entrance, addressed, the audience, and duly set about his several duties. The thanks or the club are due to the staff ot the local school for supplying items dm nig the afternoon. The Orphans Club orchestra supplied appropriate music, and a pleasant afternoon ended with the singing of tho National Anthem. A dance was held in the evening, when a large crowd of visitors and friends attended from Dunedin, the Peninsula Motor Service having to put on extra buses to cope with tho traffic. Many visitors are arriving m the Bay at present, and accommodation will be‘taxed to the limit. A long-felt want in the district is the matter of a suitable boarding house. The Regatta Committee is still working hard, and from entries received to date the regatta should be one of the best yet held. i r>‘i: f 'flic secretary of the local Relief Committee states that . unemployment funds arc urgently required, and donations will bo thankfully received.
