Mr J. H. Aldridge, L.A.P., has been appointed official accompanist to the Royal Dunedin Male Choir. Messrs W. E. Reynolds and J. Dunlop, members of the Dairy Produce Board, returned to Dunedin by the through express yesterday.

Mr Vernon Smith and Mr C. Godwin left for Wellington on a business visit by the first express this morning. Mr E. H. Lough was a passenger for Christchurch by this morning’s early express.

Mr John M'Douald travelled to-day from Dunedin to Christchurch, by the special train. The Rev. R. Scott Allan, Presbyerian minister at Musselburgh, will retire at the end of February next. Mr Allan was ordained in 1895, and during the past thirty-six years he has served at Lawrence. Kaitangata ; Sydenham (Christchurch), and Dunedin, where he has been working for over twenty years.

Mr George Petersen, advance agent for Wirth’s Circus, was in Dunedin yesterday making arrangements for the appearance of the circus here at the end of November. The funeral of Sir G. W. C. Macdonald, whose remains were laid to rest in the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery, took place this morning, a large number of citizens, representative of all walks of: life, attending to pay a last tribute to, one who had done so much in training ’ many thousands of children. The services at the residence in Ravensbourne and at the cemetery were conducted by •' the Rev. J. J. Cairney, who paid the ; very highest tribute to the memory of,: the deceased as a and citi- v zen, and also as a true patriot, who gave of his energies freely to public bodies for the public welfare. The children of the Ravensbourne School were drawn up on each side of the road as, the cortege passed, and two beautiful', wreaths were placed on the coffin. At .l the Macandrew Road School, where Mr] Macdonald laboured so successfully for ’ many years, the children and teachers* lined the roadside, and the same procedure followed at the Musselburgh School. The pall-bearers—representa-* tives of the teachers, the Head Masters’ ] Association, and .the military forces—J were Messrs Edmund Smith, J. H. d Moir, W. Strong, A. Forsyth, D. Tur-| uer, and P. Frederick. There was a' firing party under Sergeant-major] White at the graveside, and Lieutenant' Napier sounded the ‘ Last Post.’ At the monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council yesterday the: chairman (Mr H. Macandrew) referredto the death of Mr Arthur Marshall,. who had reported the meetings of the council for a considerable time. Mr' Marshall was highly respected by all who knew him, and was very conscien- \ tious in his work, added Mr Macandrew. All his reporting was of the highest class, and all the members of j the council regretted his passing. The: speaker moved that a letter or sym- ? pathy.be sent to Mr Marshall’s family,T and this was agreed to, all present standing in silence for a few moments. Mr A. D. Warden (Melbourne), Mr Edward E. Grimwade (Auckland), and Messrs G. Robertson and W. F. Nicholls (Wellington) are staying at the Grand Hotel. Guests at the Excelsior Hotel include , Mr and Mrs D. and Master Markham, ~ Mr H. S. N. Conway (Wellington), Mr; G. Sumpter (Oamaru), and Mr H. G. Chapman (Invercargill). Registrations at the City Hotel are: Mr F. E. Hince (Melbourne), Mr N. Stewart (Petone), Messrs J. M. Dunn and O. M. Hewici (Wellington), and Mr H. F. Larsen, (Timaru).
