A WOMAN’S NEEDS
£4l 10/- A YEAR FOR CLOTHES
ADELAIDE, November 2,
The Industrial Court is hearing an application by employers for a reduction in the living wage for women to 39s a week. Evidence concerning what girls consider to be necessary for comfort was given. Ono witness estimated her annual expenditure on clothes at £4l 10s, and said that her hoard money, income tax, charities, church collections, and union dues would amount to about the same sum.
A wardsmaid, of Kent Town, put down as some of her costs seven guineas for a costume to last two years, five guineas for a top coat, five guineas for a summer frock, and 22s 6d for a bathing suit. She required in a year four pairs of shoes, twelve pairs of stockings, six tubes of tooth paste, twelve cakes of toilet soap, and four hats.
