Or Tomkins (chairman of the Finance Committee) made mention of the fact that £2,343 of the total rates struck had been paid by July 30, on which date discount of 5 per cent, was allowed for prompt payment. Tho amount collected represented 45 per cent, of the total rates struck, and was a very striking percentage in view of the prevailing economic conditions.

Accounts amounting to £B9O were passed for payment. The mayor and the chairman of tho Finance Committee were instructed to make personal representations to tho Chief Postmaster in connection with the postal facilities at the Green Island Post Office.

A letter was received from Mr D. W. M‘Phail in regard to the entrance to his property from Binnie street, and on the recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided to form the entrance to the property. With the expressed purpose of bringing pressure on tho Government to spend more money on country roads than on roads for tourist traffic, a letter was received from the Milton District Unemployment Committee dealing with the amount of money that was being expended on the Haast Pass road. —After some consideration it was decided to support the protest of the Milton body, the voting being five votes to four.

A petition from residents of Abbotsford protesting against the closing of Runciman street was received by the Works Compiitteo, which recommended that a footpath-be formed in the street from the main road to Neil street.— Or Orange explained that the engineer had estimated - that tho cost of reopening Runciman street would be about £2,000, an undertaking which could not possibly be considered by tho council at the present time. The question of charging for house connections to_ stormwater drains was given full consideration, and it was decided on the motion of Cr Orange that when tho main sewer was constructed a charge be made on all householders discharging sewerage into the drain. Cr Webster stressed the importance of providing fire protection in the borough, 'and on his motion it was decided that the town clerk bo instructed to go into the cost of providing several hoses and hydrants at various points in the borough. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The Engineer (Mr F. J. Williams) reported that the only work done on the Dunedin-Tnvercargill highway since his last report had been the repairs to the guard fence on the Look-out Point section.
