OBITUARY

MR JAMES JENKINS After twp years of ailing and suffer* ing during the- past_ few months, an old and respected resident of the Dunedin district, Mr James Jenkins, passed away on Saturday. Born l in Gloucestershire seventy-nine years ago, h© settled at Green Island when he came to New Zealand, and he was in business there foi over twenty years till P© retired about seventeen years ago. He was a man who gave faithful service to the community in which ho lived, and that his services were appreciated and his qualities respected was reflected in his election to the mayoralty of the borough. For many years he held a seat on tho borough, council, and was in office on the auspicious occasions, for the borough, of the inauguration of tho water service aud electric lighting. He was also a prime mover in obtaining a post office for Green Island. Mr Jenkins was also a justice of the peace. The last public function at Green Island attended by Mr Jenkins was the luncheon held on the occasion of the opening of the aerodrome. His health then began to decline, but in the last two months of bis life he suffered extremely. H© leaves a widow, three sons, two daughters, and a stepson. At last night’s meeting of tho Green Island Borough _ Council the mayor (Mr W. T. Smellie) moved that a letter of sympathy be sent to the relatives of the late Mr Jenkins. Ho stated that Mr _ Jenkins had been a resident of the district for many year 8 * and he was one who was actively interested in the welfare of the borough.
