LAUNDRY LORE

Hero are a few very useful hints which every housewife will appreciate :

Snow-white Clothes Winter drying often makes white clothes take on a yellow tinge. This can be removed and the things brought back to their original whiteness by steeping them over-night in water to which some cream of tartar has been added. Use a dessertspoonful of cream of tartar to every gallon of water.

Instead of Starch Water in which rice has been boiled can be used in place of starch to stiffen table napkins, tray cloths, and, in fact, anything that does not require to bo too stiff. Washing Woollens.—Wash them quickly in warm water made lathery with a good soap powder. Have the water of such a temperature that the hands can be held in it comfortably. Squeeze the woollens up and down in this, but do not rub or twist,- and on no account rub soap on to them. Rinse in one or more slightly soapy waters to which a little powdered borax has been added (these rinsing waters should bo of the same temperature as the first one), and dry quickly in the open air. Tussore Silk.—This should _ never be ironed damp, for it will make it stiff and mark it. Let it get perfectly dry, then iron it on the wrong side. When it begins to lose its natural colour you can restore this by adding a little strained tea to the final rinsing water. Damping Made Easy.—lf warm water is used for damping the clothes instead of cold it will spread evenly, and a simple sprinkler which will make the work easier still can be made by drilling one or two holes in the cork of a widemouthed bottle. Do not have the holes too big, but let them be large enough for the water to come through easily. For Cretonnes. —Cretonnes should be washed in 'bran water, which will pro vent the colours running and will stiffen them slightly. The same hint applies to embroidery and chintz.
