£31,000 OUTSTANDING The eleventh-hour rush for the payment of City Corporation rates took place at the Town Hall during the last few days, yesterday being the last day on which payment could bo mado without incurring a ten per cent, penalty. Yesterday was a particularly busy day. altogether a total of £54,000, involving 2,600 accounts, being paid in. The electric receipting machines wero worked at top pressure. After the payments yesterday there was an amount of £31,000 outstanding, bnt the mail to-day was expected to bring in a fairly large sum, as for the last year or two, the following day’s mail' has accounted for a further £15,000 to £20,000. Last year £48,000 was paid in on tho closing day, and tho amount outstanding was almost tho same as tins year. The amount of rales levied by _lho City Council for 1030-31 is £208,583, as compared with £285,077,,
