UNEMPLOYMENT ACT

OPERATION OF BOARD'S NO. 2 SCHEME FEW OFFERINGS OF WORK The Mayor (Mr 11. S. Black) stated this morning that only about- half a dozen offers had been received from people who were willing to provide work under tho terras of the Unemployment Board’s No. 2 scheme, by which a subsidy of 7s a day is granted on wages to private employers. ]n order to assist in relieving the position over the holidays tho mayor again makes a strong appeal to citizens to take advantage of the scheme. He said that so far tho response had been very disappointing, though it was an excellent chance for people to have cleaning-up work done. Every morning the mayor has the unenviable task of meeting a number of the unemployed who call at his office. This morning there was a slightly larger muster than usual, the men attending to see if any work was being provided under tho proposal to subsidise private employers, but all the mayor could tell them was that the response had been far short of anticipation. Yesterday there was a meeting of representatives of various bodies in the Town Hall to form a committee to deal with applications for work which might bo received. At a subsequent meeting of the committee applications for work to be done under the scheme were approved. It is desired to point out that those wishing to engage labour must first of all apply to the secretary < f the executive, Mr S. G. M'Donald, town clerk’s office, Town Hall. In making application employers should state (a) the class of work to be .done, (b) duration of the work, (c) number of men required, and (d) the rate of wages to be paid. When the application is approved the number of men required will be sent to the applicant by the Labour Department.
