MILK SUPPLY
MUNICIPAL SCHEME INOPPORTUNE EXISTING ARRANGEMENTS SATISFACTORY HEAVY CAPITAL BORROWING UNWISE On the grounds that the present system ot milk distribution and sale has not given rise to general complaint, and that the present time, with embarkation on proposals v involving substantial borrowing an unwise step, is inopportune for the introduction of a municipal milk supply, the General Committee has drawn up an adverse report bn the request of the Dunedin Housewives’ Union, for an investigation of a municipal supply. A letter had been received from the Dunedin Housewives’ Union asking that the council appoint a special commit; tee to make investigations into all details relative to the introduction of a municipal milk supply, and to submit a report to the council at a subsequent meeting. “ Your committee has taken the matter into consideration,” states the report, “ and is of opinion that the time is not yet opportune for disturbing the existing arrangements for the sale and distribution of > milk, which have, so far as the committee is aware, not given rise to any genera! complaint. “ In any case nothing could be done in the matter by the council without legislative authority, which would pre sumably, as in the case of Welhn" ton. require to provide for the council having a virtual monopoly ol the saband distribution of milk throughout thf “ The capital cost of giving effect te such a proposal would bo very heavy, and from that viewpoint alone it is considered unwise to embark in the near future, on anv proposal that would involve substantial .borrowing by the municipal account.” The committee therefore recommends that the union be advised in those terms.
