FROM ‘STAR FILES' The latest news from South Africa is of an alarming character. Reports have been received of the massacre of white people by the natives of Natal, and the position of the colonists and troops is daily becoming more critical. Assistance from England is - urgently required. * •- * * The City Council, by seven votes to five, decided to call for tenders for the right to lay-a tramway to Mornington via High street. * * * * Tho city gas engineer has been instructed to order at cost price 100 tons of Westport coal to test its gas-produc-ing qualities, in order that the result may bo ascertained before the next six months’supply of coal for gas-making purposes is called. * * * * A sculling match took place over the usual champion course on the Thames between Laycock, of Sydney, and Hosmer, of Boston, United States of America, for £2OO a side. Laycock won by three lengths. «• * * Mr David Proudfoot, contractor, of Dunedin, has made an offer to the city authorities to construct tramways in Melbourne, find his proposal is under consideration. **# * ’ Beautiful weather was experienced for the V.R.C. Spring Meeting. The Melbourne Cup resulted-Grand Flaneur X, Progress 2, Lord Burghley 3. There were twenty-two starters. Tho favourites were Progress and Grand Flaneur; then Lord Burghley and Mata (New Zealand). « * « * The West Harbour Borough Council has negotiated a 7 per cent, loan for £2,555. The last act in connection with the murder at Kyeburn of Mrs Young took place at 8 o’clock this morning (November 5), when the execution of Ah Lee was effected. Prior to that hour several hundred persons assembled along the line of Castle street outside tho gaol walls, while others mounted the roofs of buildings in Lower Stuart street anxious to get a glimpse of the proceedings. Their curiosity _ was not gratified as the gaol authorities had made complete arrangements to shut out the view of what was going on from those outside the building. '« * » * The Pope has assented to a proposal that a portion of the French Jesuits should form a society for the propagation of the faith in Central Africa. ■« * * * Messrs H. S. Fish and A. H. Ross notify their intention to stand for the mayoralty. * * * « By Mata’s win in the V.R.C. Handicap the New Zealanders at Flemmgton all made money, and it is said that a Dunedin bookmaker “potted £I,OOO on the event. It will be recollected that Le/Loup scored a win in this race last year.
