BOWLERS’ PROTEST

SUGGESTED MATERNITY HOSPITAL SITE A special meeting of . the Dunedin Bowling Centre was 'held last night, the president (Air W. Rowley) being in the chair, when tho suggestion that the Dunedin Bowling Club’s property in Cumberland street should bo secured for tho purpose of building the maternity hospital was discussed. Mr D. C. Cameron, jun. (St. Kilda) referred to the proposal for tho acquisition of the site, and expressed tho sympathy of his club with the Dunedin Club in its protest against any such action being taken. He moved —“ That this centre with concern that there is a suggestion to take the Dunedin Bowling Club’s ground for hospital purposes, and that it strongly supports the club in its protest against any action being taken in this direction, whilst other sites are available; and it pledges itself to take further steps to protect tho club’s interests if it be found necessary; further, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Minister of Health.” Mr W. Connor (West Harbour) seconded the motion, and said that the Dunedin Green had made a reputation for itself not only throughout New Zealand, but also in Australia; and ho mentioned that it had taken sixty years to bring the green up to a state of perfection that was not equalled elsewhere in the dominion He considered that the site should not be acquired while any other site was available._ Tho green at present was one of the city’s amenities, and he felt that not only bowlers, but many other citizens, would • view with disfavour tho taking of that site. The President expressed tho sympathy of his club (Leith) with the Dunedin Club, and said that all the other clubs would support tho Dunedin Club in its protest.
