AUSTRALIANS BEAT NORTH ISLAND FIVE RUBBERS TO ONE [Pzk Unitbd Fmss Ahociitiow.] WELLINGTON, February 28. Ideal weather prevailed to-day for the lawn tennis matches between the North Island and the Australian touring team. The visitors proved superior, winning 5 rubbers to 1. D. G. Franco was disappointing against C. Sproule, whoso quiet placements and fleetness of foot and steadiness were impressive. Franco was quite off form. Kahns Overwhelmed Malfroy in the first set, which occupied a few minutes, Malfroy miss-hitting nearly everything. In the second set Malfroy handled Kalm’s service well and fought on even terms with the Australian, whose volleying was the deciding factor*. N. R. C. Wilson 1 drove to the side lines and served well, against Donohue, who was erring on AVilsoh’s service. His victory was well deserved. Teague and Stedman gave a good exhibition of baseline driving, but Stedman tired in the third set. Teague has a good service and back-hand. Kalms and Teague lobbed magnificently in the third set of the doubles, which were disappointing. Wilson played badly, but his partner, Stedman, played well. Wilson left far too many open spaces, and Kalins and Teague took advantage of them. The Now Zealand doubles champions, France and Malfroy, attacked in vain from the net against Sproule and Donohoe, who were very steady. They made some good recoveries and anticipated well.
