PORTOBELLO ROAD FATALITY.
TO THU EDITOR. Sir,-—ln reply to “ Safety First,” I wish, as part owner of the' shed mentioned in his letter, to contradict some at least of his unwarranted statements. I have since measured the road in this locality, and can give absolute denial to his' statements regarding _ the obscured vision, From tho point where the accident happened there is a clear and unobstructed view to the northern corner of 110yds, and towards the houseboat the view is also unobstructed for 300yds. By placing two cars as far as possible from the scene of tho accident, yet clearly visible to each other, the car approaching Dunedin was 110yds from this spot, and the car proceeding towards Fortobello was 40yds away from the spot, thus giving a clear vision of 150yds between the twp cars ‘ Safety First ” states that with his thousands of times of motoring over this read he can see only 50yds oi clear vision at this 'spot. I have measured this carefully, and can assure him that my statements are correct. Tho shed in question is built on a site approved of by the Harbour Board engineer, and docs not obscure the vision at this part of the road. Regarding the width! of the road (23ft), this does not vary more than 2ft from the houseboat to the ■northern corner, a distance of more than 400yds.:—I am, etc., C. Pettit, • January 4.
