AUSTRALIAN BUTTER
THE PATERSQH PLAN EFFECT ON INDUSTRY., Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, Decembfer 31. The expedient known as tho Paterson scheme, which was adopted four years ago and by which the butter producers of Australia subsidised tho export trade through a levy on local sales, has had far-reaching effects. Among these has been an additional return during the period mentioned of £10,000,000 to producers and a corresponding added cost to the Australian public for butter for local consumption. The condensed milk export trade is also feeling the effects of the high cost of butter-fat. A leading firm, which has been paying 3d per lb extra, now finds that it cannot compete with the overseas manufacturers and, announces a reduction in the price payable to the milk producers by tho equivalent of Id a pound for butter-fat in New South Wales, lid in Queensland, and 1-id in Victoria. * The matter is being considered earnestly h.v tho interested sections of the milk-producing and manufacturing industry in the hope of saving the condensed milk business.
