YACHTING

BROAD BAY REGATTA SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE The Broad Bay Boating Club’s annual regatta held yesterday was a great success, although the weather conditions were rather unpleasant at times. Hie water was chappy. There was a fair attendance of the public. Sixteen events were witnessed, and although large entries were received for most of the races many, of the boats did'not start. Omy three boats out of ten entries started in the race for 12ft Cin and under yachts, and Good Luck. capsized when running before the wind, but her young crew was quickly rescued by Mr J. I otter with nis largo power boat. _ Hie West Harbour Brass Band was m attendance. Tiie dinghy rowing races and the aquaplanfiig events were abandoned owing to the small number of entries received and the rough water. The regatta was ivell controlled. The speed boats made a fine showing in the various events, the race lor the C. G. Wakefield Cup claiming special attention. The trophy is competed for at every regatta, and the boat securing most points at the cloce of the season will be awarded the cup, to be held lor one year. The first race for the cip was won by Mr T. Penrose’s Mist at the Macandrew Bay regatta on Boxing D*:y. Yesterday’s race was ivon by Mr 11 Speight’s Argo, which had a handicap of Imin fiOsec, and which beat Mist by Imin 2-ssec. The race between outboard boats for the championship of the harbour was disappointing, only three boats competing. Tho last race between motor boats fo; the silver cup oy Dr Cottrell was closely contested. Nine boats started, and six crossed the finishing line within a few seconds of each other. The launch That is started 12 nin after the first boat’was sent away, and eventually gained fifth place. The motor boat race was interesting, the cruising launch Thetis, owned by Mr 0. W. Sundstrnm, being seen racing for i be; first time. Having a good turn of - speed Thetis was sent away l-3min 20sec after the first boat. Thetis won the event by lOsec. One of the finest sights seen on the harbour for some time past was the showing made by the six yachts which competed in'the race for boats 20ft and over. The strong wind called for a yachtsman’s ability, and the compet/ng oiews rose fo the ociasion. Tho new six-metre yacht Dawn and the keefer Tucana fought for leading place, and at the end of the first round Dawn led the other boat by about half a minute. Dawn drew clear away from Tucana in the second round, and although H. Neos sailed skilfully his boat was beaten tor first place by the Marconi-rigged Shadow, which had a handicap of 7min. The competitors in the race for , 20ft and over 12ft Cin yachts, carried a heavy crew of four. With the crews hanging out to windward, the boats had a hard thrash to tho weather mark in the strong and squally sou’-wester, and the young skippers had to bring all their skill into play to keep, the boats on an even keel. The 14-footer Squib, winch had sailed into third position, capsmed when tho spinnaker was being set.- The crew was quickly rescued. Results:— ' . SAILING RACES. YACHTS, 20fb and over. fm.
