HOLIDAY EXODUS
MANY THOUSANDS TRAVELLING The' pleasant weather conditions pre- , vailing yesterday induced many thousands to leave the city. Trains, trains, ,and buses were all crowded to capacity with thousands of pleasurp-seekers, and as a result the city was extremely quiet during the day. The inclemency of the weather previously doubtless affected traffic returns to some extent, but the railway authorities report that the traffic handled for the season was even greater than last year. Yesterday 1,632 (an increase of 600 over the previous year) were attracted to the Waikouaiti races by rail, while numberless people journeyed thence by oar. Thousands responded to the call of the sea, a very pleasant day being spent at. the beaches and sea resorts. On New Year’s Eve the city nas extremely busy, the trams especially being very well patronised.' Corporation and city buses were also kept very busy throughdpt the day and evening, and yesterday sight-seeing, trips were highly popular. The tramway returns show a substantial increase over the figures of last year. The takings on Christmas Eve were £468 12s Id (£441 12s 4d), and on New Year’s Day £306 0s 7d (£257 0s 3d).' The following figures indicate the extent to which the railways were patronised during tho holiday season:— • Tuesday.—-8.33 a.m, to Invercargill, 240; 8.40 a.m. to Christchurch, 210; 11.35 a.m. to Lyttelton, 370; 4.40 p.m. to Invercargill, 450-; 10.18 p.m. to Palmerston, 200.
