MONTHLY MEETING Or J. W. Blair (chairman) presided over the monthly meeting of the Taieri County Counqil yesterday. REPORTS. The Inspector of Works (Mr John Garrett) reported in detail on the work of the past month. . The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the month had been £420 Os 6d, and recommended payment of accounts totalling £l,BlO ss.—Report adopted The Sanitary Inspector reported favourably on tne slaughter houses tn the county, the piggeries at Green Island Bush, and the boiling-down works at Burnside. ’ Nine building permits had _ been granted during the month. —Received. The Ranger reported having impounded twelve head of cattle during the month.—Received. TENDERS, Tenders were dealt with as follow Contract No. 29, delivery of 700 cubic vards of gravel, Green Island to Brighton—W. Casey and Sons, £lO7 lUs; Balclutha Gravel Company, £ll7 10s; J. L. Hughes, £137 Is 8d; Foote and Co., £14.0 12s 6d; J. C. Mowat, £155; J. H. M'Kay, £l7l ss. . Contract No. 30, quarrying and delivering 300 yards gravel, Kuri Bush to Taieri Mouth bridge—J. L. Hughes, £75: Balclutha Gravel Company, £Bb ss; J. H. M‘Kay, £9O; Foote and Co., £l3O 12s 6d. • ■ ' J Contract No, 31, delivery 150 tons metal on Otokia-Kuri road —I'oote and Co., £45; W Casey and Sons, £6O; Sprott and Tirablick, £6O. . The lowest tender was accepted m each case. CORRESPONDENCE. The Secretary, Otago Motor Club, directed attention to the height ot the hedges at the intersection of certain roads more particularly Wingatui and Factory roads and Gordon and North Taieri roads, obscuring the view ot motorists. —Received; clerk to reply that hedges are already cut. The Perpetual Trustees Company, on behalf of T, E. Wilkin’s estate, wrote regarding the improvements on Gladstone road at borough boundary carried out recently and the draining of the storm water into the paddock alongside without first notifying them.—To be notified that pipes will be removed when ground consolidates. ■ W. T Adam, secretary Otekia Cemetery Trustees, wrote regarding difficulty of motor hearses getting up the hill to the cemetery in wet weather, and asking that it receive a coat of metal.—lo be left with inspector and member tor the riding, with power to act. The Town Clerk, Outrara, wrote statng that his board proposed to kerb and channel Holyhead and Hoy lake streets, and asking for a subsidy towards cost of work.—The council will favourably consider the matter. Alex. H Scott directed attention to the state of the road between Henley station and Henley bridge; it was badly rutted.—To be informed that heavy traffic will be finished,at the end of the week. . Lu connection with the silting or March Creek. Middlemarch, a letter was read from tne secretary, High School Board, enclosing a copy of clause in board’s leasee showng that tenants were

liable for cleaning ditches once at least in every year.—Clerk to reply to the board giving names of tenants and requesting that the clause be put into use. The District Medical Officer of Health wrote asking the council to appoint Mr R. W. Connor as inspector, vice Mr W. M. Armour, transferred to another district.—Agreed to. The Secretary, Farmers’ Union, Middlemarch, wrote with respect to reducing the grade on the Deep Stream Hill, and notifying that a deputation would wait on the council. He urged that the Public Works Department be approached in the matter. —Agreed. .The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote regarding the application of Nelson M'Coll for two-way lanes under Brighton-Saddle Hill road. —The Engineer reported regarding the application of Mr N. M'Coll, of Brighton, to put a tunnel under the roadway in his cqal mine. Cr MTntosh and himself inspected the mine. They recommended that the application be granted on condition that the work was carried out to the satisfaction of the Mines Department. and that the tunnel be filled with stone when tbe work in this section of the mine was finished. The Secretary, Brighton Lawn Tennis Club, asked for price for gravel for laying, down new courts. —The usual price to be charged D. M. Park (Outramf asked for permission to erect a private telephone to 'his residence.—Granted. GENERAL. Cr Findlay reported on a slight scour of the foundations of a bridge on Rollinson’s road Whare Fiat, and the inspector was instructed to have tho washout reinstated. With respect to the Silverstream rate for 1929-30 it was decided to levy this rate in the same proportions as the past year, and the clerk was instructed to attend to the advertising, as required by law. Cr Carruthers moved that the storm water from the hotel property at Middlemarch ’be run into the post office drain.—Agreed to. Cr Blaii asked that tho inspector should obtain an estimate for tar spraying tiie Outram road from the bank to Brooke’s shop.—Agreed to.
