SCENE IN BRITISH COURT A girl Communist had to be carried out of Bow Street Police Court recently, kicking and singing the ‘ Internationale.’ She was Sarah Burl, and the cnarge agaist her was assaulting a constable. The girl, with four other women, hander cd herself to the top of a bus. When the charge was read out a woman at the back of the court cheered and applauded. She was removed by a policewoman. Constable Green described how he was called to a bus on which five women and a man were handcuffed together in pairs. Burl,, ho said, squirted soda water over him. Burl: i suppose this is your baptism ot fire? Did the crowd laugh?—No. Did yon take part in the last war?— No, Are you prepared to take part in the next? The magistrate (Mr Graham Campbell) said such questions wore not relevant. and the constable need not answer them. Tho bus conductor, Fred Brooks, was asked by Burl: “Did you serve in ihe war?”—Yes. Burl: How many Germans did you murder?- —L don’t know. Burl: Arc you proud of it?—Yes. Burl said their presence on the top of the bus was an anti-war demonstration. “The present Labour Government is carrying out war preparations,” she said." “Our presence in Downing street and at tho Hendon Air Pageant was for the purpose of making a demonstration against war. We women intend to stand by Russia, whose main object is to maintain completely peaceful relations with the workers of the world.
The constable said that Burl was recently ejected From the House of Commons' with some other women. When the magistrate announced a fine of 10s. Burl began to sing tho ‘lnternationale’ at the top _ of her vo'oe Several other women joined in, but the court was quickly cleared.
