The ‘Daily Express’s’ Berlin correspondent states that President Hindenbtirg, while manifesting strict neutrality in the campaign for a referendum on the Young plan, has come out into the open and lias condemned the clause in the Nationalists’ proposed Referendum Bill providing that Ministers signing the Young plan should be Impeached for treason. He told the Chancellor that he regretted the inclusion of the clause, which was illegal and libellous. Tt is generally thought that the President’s outspokenness wilS minimise the chance of obtaining the necessary signatures.—Australian Press Association [The Monarchists’ latest throw against tho Republic began with an attempt to get before November 29 the statutory 4,000,000 signatures to demand a referendum on tbe Young plan. All tho Government leaders issued manifestos to the people to ignore the petitions, and President ITindenhurg found it necessary to protest against the use of his name. The Monarchist circulars stated that if the petitions were adequately signed, there would be a referendum, in which 50 per coni, of the electors must vote solidly to ensure rejection of the plan.]
