HORSE OWNERS AND BREEDERS

OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Otago and Southland Horse Owners and Bredors’ Association was held on Thursday evening, Mr R. Green (president) presiding. A resolution of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr John M’Kewen, who was a keen supporter of the association. A discussion took place in regard to the gate leading out of the birdcage at Wingatni. The opinion of the members was that this should be a sliding one, and that the end of it should be padded. It was decided to write to the Dunedin Jockey Club asking if it could carry out this improvement when the proposed alteration to the judge’s box was being effected. The matter of handicapping was discussed, and it was thought that there were too many handicappers in the South; eonseonently there were a great many anomalies occurring in regard to handicanning. It was thought that if one handienpper could be anoointsd for the whole of the district it would lie a step in the right direction, and would put an end to a great amount of dissatisfaction amongst owners and trainers. It was pointed out that several of the handicappers did not visit race meetings, and it would be of great assistance to them if they did so. It was resolved to write to the Dunedin Jockey Club recommending it to bring the matter before the District Committee, and to endeavour to have one handicapper appointed for the Otago district.

General satisfaction was freely expressed in connection with the management of the Empire Pictures for screening pictures of local racing and trotting events. This was certainly very interesting, and very popular with the racing community. It was decided to write to the Geraldine Club stating that its handicaps should appear earlier, so that owners would be in a position to know the weights allotted to their horses prior to trucking. Members appreciated the action of this club in granting an allowance in connection with freights on visiting horses.
