EXHIBITION OF SKETCHES

WORK OF OTAGO ARTISTS QUALITY FROM JUNIORS AS WELL AS SENIORS Years ago Dunedin had an annual display of .’(ketches under the auspices of the Otago Art Society. It served to bring to notin’, many students who have since found their efforts at self-expres-sion appreciated by the public. The scheme of a similar oxhihithni is now revived, with results so sati tying as to beget: a hope that the ideawill ho followed up annually. Thanhs to The Ilristul Piano Company a setable place has been found, the nse_ of the company’s concert chamber hei"g granted from to-day until Saturday of this week - . Good lighting is thus .secured, also the detachment from bustle that counts for a great deal'when one wishes to meditate. This exhibition is worthy of close study. Two hundred and liffy-oue untrained sketches urn shown by thirty-one working members of the Otago Art Society, and the le,vcd of merit is surpiisinglv high. The contributors are W. Sinai!!,-E. TV Cook,_A. J. Alorrison. Alice Lotldnn, A; Latham, R. TV Little, Dorothy Jenkin, I." D. Gross. F. Hrookesmith. P, L. Ritchie, W. IT. Allen, A. Perlman, TV 11. Jenkln. Nelhe L. D. Hutton,If. Prowse. Tlmy are showing of their bc’-t, and it is obvious that their eyes are not dim imr their natural force abated. They still have confidence in Hie handling oi; massed values: their imagination is- a* keen as ever. The qualify of the na : M.ing that carries the signritnros ol iei-yer-knewn students is a feature that give’? great pleasure. Some of their sketches reveal great merit and high promise. It may he taken for certain that in ties particular one may trace (lie uplifting effects of the open-air study by llnwo who constitute that valuable adjunct to oin- art life, the Sketching Club. Experienced artists . who visited iho exhibition this morning expressed iho opinion that iho standard all round is distinctly above expectations and unusually even, there being very few exhibits that can he passed over after a glance. As the sketches arc all untrained the prices (all plainly marked) are quite reasonable, and such as to bo within the means of the poorest "rt lovers, so this exhibition provides mi opportunity to secure additions to collections. Admission is free.
