MAORI’S ASTOUNDING MASQUERADE AMUSING SCENES IN COURT HAORA REMOVES BLACK CLOCHE HAT. [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May G. Nikorahunc Haora, a Maori, aged twenty-five, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon for having falsely represented .himself as a female. Accused, who had been masquerading as a housemaid, for three months m a Takapuna household (the family comprised the husband, the wife, and a seventeen-year-old son, and three young daughters) came out of the room in the court usually reserved for female prisoners, and was dressed in a fashionable creyo de chine frock, a nigger blown coat, a black cloche hat, grey silk stockings, and patent leather, high-hecicd shoes. The Magistrate (.Mr Hunt), alter Haora had pleaded guilty, said; “if ho is a" man ho had better take his hat off for a start.”

Haora hesitated, then removed his hat. Long wavy hair fell about his neck, and tho crowd in the court laughed. Sub-inspector AFCarthy said the case was one where a man had an inclination for women’s work, but Haora could not bo allowed to continue masquerading as a woman. “Take him away and burn those clothes, he's got on,” said the Alagisfcrato (Mr Hunt), then send him back to his people. The Sub-inspector: People who know him speak very well of Haora. A woman who has had quite a lot to do with Haora still refuses to believe that he is a man. (Laughter.) Air AFCarthy added that Haora was well educated. Air Hunt remarked that there were many cases in history of a feminine mind and a masculine body.

The story of the masquerade appears on page 1.
