OPIUM SMOKER CHARGED

AA’hen Detectives Loan, Bussell, and Jenvey visited the accused’s room upstairs'iu the “ cook house ” in Carroll street, said the chief detective, they met the accused coming down. Ho had a tobacco tin in ids pocket, in which there was some raw opium and a Quantity of seconds. Entering his room thev found seconds, a pipe (which was quite warm), a lamp (which was quite warm), and 'quite a quantity of paraphernalia used for the smoking of opium. .The Magistrate: “How long would the seconds (produced) last an opium srnokci'f'” . The Chief Detective replied that this would depend a great deal on how long the habit was acquired. He understood that the accused himself would not he able to use the amount «f seconds lie Jiad inside twelve mtroths, The, interpreter said that Wah said he had been smoking since ho was young. Ho had asthma, and that was why he was smoking. He was sixtyfour vears of age. The Magistrate: 11 How long could it take him to smoke all those seconds and raw opium'-”’ The interpreter replied that newsed said ho had been smoking every duy. but could not tel! how long it would take. He had been smoking since he was twenty years of age. The accused said he had no money after the magistrate had intimated that a line of AMU would he indicted. The. accused was remanded for a week to enable inquiries to be made about him before default was fixed.
