jpEOM Ora Correspondent.] ' BALCLUTHA, December 19. Tiie weather has been very hot this last day or two, and people are finding difficulty in becoming acclimatised after so much cold, wet weather. Shearing operations have been resumed, and are in full swing. The milk supply at the factories lias increased considerably, the Stirling factory having readied a record in its history for the quantity of milk being supplied. The cheese from this factory has been sold up to the end of November at Oil per lb. Quito a number of dairy cows in the district were alfected with inflammation of the odder as a result of the cold weather, but the warmth of the past few days is greatly assisting towards their recovery. Mr and Mrs Walter Murray, who have moved from Warcpa to Baiclutha, were, prior to their departure from Warcpa, entertained at a farewell function, at which they were presented with an oak clock with Westminster chimes. Memliers of the family also received tokens of esteem and goodwill. M Bruce Noble, who lias been assistant clerk to the Clutha County Council for the past three and a-lialf years, has been appointed to a similar office with the Peninsula County Council, and takes up his new duties on January 7. At to-day's meeting of the Clutha County Council it was decided to send a congratulatory telegram to Sir Joseph Ward on his success at the poll, and to thank the Hon. G. J. Andcrbo;i for services rendered as member, for Mataura. CLUTHA COUNTY AFFAIRS. The Clutha Comity Council met today, Cr W, J. M'Kcnzio presiding. The report of the engineer (Mr G. 1 T. Gould) stated that various repairs and maintenance contracts were being carried out while the good weather lasted. A Welir motor grader has been purchased for work in the Maclennan district, and has already effected a great improvement to the roads. The Waitcpcka canal bridge has been completed, and fair progress is being made with the formation of the approaches. It is hoped to open the bridge temporarily for the holiday traffic to Kaka Point, which is likely to be considerable on account of the carnival there during Christmas and New Year. The road from Baiclutha to Kaka Point has been graded ,and is now in fairly good order. Fair progress is being made with the ncit bridge at Arthurton, and the placing of the concrete was commenced last week. The Main Highways Board wrote advising of tho approval of the council’s proposal to purchase a rotary gravel screen plant, motor pumps, etc., at a no.st of £350. Tho engineer was granted the necessary leave to attend a conference of engineers in Christchurch in February. The resignation of Mr W. M‘Lolland as county surfaceman was received, and it was stated that he was probably the oldest surfaceman in New Zealand, having served for forty-five years with tho Clutha county. It was decided to grant him a month’s lioliclajr on full pay. It was decided that the county ofno® bo closed from December 24 to January 8, and that tho surfacemen ho granted tho usual two days’ holidays at Christ- • mas and Now Year. It was decided to invite applications to he in for next meeting for the position of assistant clerk. The receipts amounted to £984 16s 7d, and the expenditure for the period to £2,266 16s 3d.
