OFFICIAL ESTIMATE OF DAMAGE ROME, November lb, (Received November 14, at 12.5 p.m.) Professor Ponte had a thrilling flight and narrowly escaped disaster. Owing to the heat' from the red-hot Java tho aeroplane slipped into an air pocket, lurched, and fell until it was only 7011, from the inferno. The aviator (Lieutenant Zanolli) just managed to right the machine and fly clear. As a result of Professor Ponte’s investigation experts are of the opinion that the main conduit of the crater is blocked; hence the eruptive violence by which the lava forced its way through the fissures. So far tho lava emitted totals 400,000,000 cubic metres.
