SCOUT NOTES

A most successful function was the Scooters and Cobbers’ dance held ,in the Vedio, when occasion was taken to make a present to Mr W. E. Meek in recognition of tho-valuable services ho had rendered during tho four years of his office as District Commissioner. In making the presentation of an enlarged photograph of tho officers of tho district, District Scooter Aguew eulogised tiie ever-rcady sympathy and help always to bo found whoa dealing with Mr Meek on all Scouting matters, and stated that tho numerical strength had increased, and that Scouting in Dunedin was now on a sounder footing. Mr Meek, in replying, mentioned several interesting lacts in connection with Scouting in Dunedin, and stated that, although it had been a very busyterm of office, tho work had been well worth while. Items were rendered during tho evening by Miss Anita Wiukel, Mr Frank To any. Scouter Pagey (Australia), and tho Rev. G, E. Moreton (Rover chaplain), the accompanists being Messrs G. Kirk Burunaud and I. A. Brewer. The singing of ‘ Auld Lung Syne’ concluded a very enjoyable evening. The district as represented at the armistice memorial service in I* irst Church by 401) Scouts, Cubs, and officers. The parade was in charge of District Scoutcrs Moore and Agnew. Assistant Commissioner Martin wins also present, and afterwards addressed the parade, complimenting the boys. Tho district was also represented at the evening service in St. Paul's. Signalling and a stretcher drill practice by the team for the St. John Ambulance Association competition formed the work for. tho evening at tho Rover Den on Thursday last. The Ist Roslyn Troop paraded at headquarters on Friday evening- The Buffaloes under Scouter Marie, ol the Green Island Troop, were instructed' in ambulance and signalling, while the Stags, under Scouter Glesson, were taught splicing. Games finished the evening’s programme. Scouter Mune was thanked for his assistance during the evening. The 4th (North) Duncdm Troop paraded on Friday night, there being a very good attendance. Tho evening was devoted mostly to games under Scouter Kirk-Burnnand, and to Anottving by tho recruits under P.L. Payton. Tho boys are showing a great interest in their work. During tho ovenino- the troop was visited by tho District Scoutmaster, who said ho was pleased to seo the standard they were maintaining. , General work and games formed the evening’s programme at the parade of the 9th Dunedin Mohicans on Wednesday. One boy passed his tenderfoot tests. A welcome visitor was Scouter Pagey, from Australia, who introduced a iTcw ' game, which was much enjoyed. A “bottle drive” arranged for Saturday afternoon proved well worth the time and labour entailed. The St. Clair Troop celebrated us first birthday on Friday, tho 2nd. The Parents Committee provided a birthday party for both Scouts and Cubs. Amongst tho visitors present were Assistant Commissioner Martin, Mrs Andrews (Commissioner of tho Girl Guides), Mr Meek, and a number of Scouters and representatives from ether troops. Commissioner Andrews and Mr Meek inspected both tho Cubs and Scouts. Tho Cubs thou gave their items round a camp fire The Scouts gave a farce and a four-act comdey. Tho Cubs and Scouts then partook of a lea prepared by tho ladies of the Parents Committee. This week fortyone Scouts answered the roll call of tho St. Clair Troop. Troop Scouter Wood rearranged tho patrols and gave tho leaders a few minutes to talk to their new patrols. Tho troop was then inspected. On Friday night thcro was a fair parade of the llavensbounio Troop, whoa five cooks’ badges were presented. Second class work was practised, and Scout C. Moore passed his second class. During the evening Scoutcrs Ashby and Kennedy visited the troop and’taught some new games. Leaders and seconds are reminded to catch the 6.40 train on Wednesday to attend an evening to bo given by Scouter Williams. Tho parents are reminded of the committee meeting to bo held on Monday, November 19. Fifteen boys answered tho roll-call of the St. Martin’s Troop on Friday night. Tho Scouts wero divided into two groups, which wont through first aid work and Scouts’ pace. _ During tho evening the troop was visited by District Scoutmaster Aguew and a visiting Scouter from Melbourne. The boys were - complimented on their smart appearance. Tho Mornington Troop paraded nt headquarters, Mornington tram sheds, on Friday last, when there was a fair muster. ’Second class and competition work was tho order of the evening, A court of honour was held after the mooting. Tho total strength of the Cubs on parade at First Church on Sunday morning last was: North Dunedin—-twenty-three cubs, two officers; St. Andrew’s —twenty-threo cubs, one officer; Ocean Beach ’(Colloo) nineteen cubs, two officers; Ocean Beach (Tantor)— nineteen cubs, two officers; St. Clair — nineteen cubs, one officer; Roslyn (Leo-pard)-—seventeen cubs, one officer; Mornington—sixteen cubs, three officers; Caversliam—thirteen cubs, one officer; Roslyn (Panther)—eleven cubs, two officers; Port Chalmers—two officers; total—lCO cubs, eighteen officers. Tho North Dunedin Pack easily held a record meeting for the year last Friday evening, there being thirty-one cubs and four officers on parade. One new six was formed under Sixer S. Qgg and Second W. Nicholson. Two boys were successful in passing their first star examination —W. Nicholson and lan Stewart. Five new members wero added to tho ranks. The work of the evening consisted as follows: —Recruits, under Assistant Austin; tenderpads, under Assistant O’Keefe and Scout G. Payton; the remainder being taken by the Cubmaster. Games were held after work and thoroughly enjoyed bv all. During tho evening the pack was visited, by Cnbber Woodcock (Mornington) and Cnbber Brown (Caversham). All Cnbbcrs are reminded of the second star examination on Saturday next, at headquarters, at 2 p.m. The weekly parade of tbc St. Martin’s pack was held on Friday, last, with a good muster of Cubs. After rollcall and inspection the Sixers took charge. Two Cubs passed their collectors’ badge. Tho latter part of tho evening was devoted to lively games. The pack started out on Saturday afternoon to walk to Signal Hill, but as it commenced to rain it was decided to return to tho Cub Hall for the rest of the afternoon. Ths Mornington Wolf Cub Pack held its weekly parade last Wednesday night, when there was a good attendance. Two boys joined. Tho Sixers took charge for first star work, and finished up with a few games. On Saturday afterjnocm tho Cubmaster and his assistants took the pack to Quarantine Island to see the Polar dogs.
