November 13, at 11.30 a.m.) A miner, named Joseph Bedford, was Overcome by black damp while sinking a coal shaft near Wallsend (Newcastle). 'A man named Thomas, who was working nearby, was attracted by the voices cf Bedford’s young brothers, who raised ;tho alarm. He went down the shaft, despite the deadly fumes. Twice ho was forced to come up owing to their effects. The third time he managed to get a rope around Bedford,' and hauled Jiim to the surface, but ho was dead.
