When concluding his speech last night on tho unemployment problem, in which ho outlined the Government’;; policy for dealing with it, Mr Churchill called tho attention of the House to certain facts winch lie thought should not he overlooked if tho problem was to ho examined in its correct perspective. Though tho present incidence of unemployment was heavy there were more people, ho said, employed in Britain than over before. Within the sphere of industrial insurance alone 350,000 more people wore now employed than four years ago. Britain still exported twice as many manufactures per head of the population as any other great country in the world, and apart from the population she actually exported more manufactures than any other country in me world.

“'Tho savings of tho people are steadily increasing. Even in these hard years tho investing power of tho nation, both at homo and abroad, is still enormous, and is still increasing. Many of tho leading industrialists aro putting them selves in far hotter positions to encounter the new stresses of modern competition. Britain’s finances aro sound and her credit is unimpaired. The reliefs to basic industry wbch have long been planned arc rapidly coming into action.”

Those considerations, Mr Churchill thought, should alone discredit any feelings of pessimism The continual development of Imperial commerce and nnmial interdependence and the settling of the vast lands within the Empire were, above all, lactors of inestimable value and mi[ orfance.-
