PAY ON THE POMARE
mm BELOW AGREEMENT STANDARD SEAMEN CHARGE RAD FAITH [Peh United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 10. A statement setting out the wages paid on the Maui Pomare, and. comparing them with the wages provided for in the agreement Irntwcen the New Zealand Seamen’s Union and the Shipowners’ Federation, has been forwarded to tlio ‘ Post’ by the Seamen’s' Union. According to this statement, the wages on the Pomaro aro as follows, the agreement rates being given in parenthesis: Boatswain, £lO a month (£lO 4s). Quartermaster, £8 (£15.45). Day man, £lO (£ls 4s). Ordinary seaman, not given (£lO 9s). Boy, £3 (£5). Greaser, £3 (£l7). ft is further stated that the hours on the Pomaro range from eight to twelve a day, with overtime without payment, as against the eight-hour day. with special payment for overtime, as iwovided under the agreement. Tim Seamen’s Union has also torwarded a copy of a. letter addressed by Mr Coates to Mr Cook (president of the Alliance of Labour) in reference to a deputation which waited on him last June in regard to the Pomaro, in which Mr Coates said that the Government had no intention of utilising tho Mam Pomaro as a means of reducing tho existing standards of the seamen’s wages,"or tho general conditions now enjoyed by seamen employed in these waters; and pointed out that tho desire of tho Government was that the Islanders should bo given tho opportunity of tho Maui Pomaro for sea training. This loiter concluded“ The Government must reserve tho right of y/rohibiting the crew from becoming members of various unions, this being a condition Unit applies to other branches of the Civil Service’whore the State services ao concerned.”
