DUNEDIN SOUTH SEAT.

■ 10 THE EDITOR. Sir, —Permit me space to correct a few of the “ tacts ” stated under the above heading by your correspondent “Fifty-fifty.’ lie says: “Mr Taverner is, oi was, a Good Templar, and has taken their oath, which is ‘Temperance for the individual, Prohibition for the country.’ and yet is standing in the interests of the Liquor Party with a Continuance Committee." Over thirty years ago Mr Taverner was, along with mysclt and other young people of Caversham. a member of the juvenile branch of Good Templars, out pledge being *' Abstinence tor the individual, temperance tor the com munity." Now, though for tho past twenty-five years Mr Taverner has not been connected with the Good lempInrs or any other temperance society, I see nothing in his views on tho Prohibition question—” a two-issue ballot ■paper, a threc-ycarly poll, and a o per cent, majority ” —m any way contrary to the interests ot true temperance. Mr Taverner is not standing in the interests of the Liquor Party; the only interest he represents is that of tho United Party, whoso chosen candidate he is. Though not a member of Air Taverner’s committee, 1 am personally acquainted with many of them, several of whom are Prohibitionists, and all of whom put the cause of true Liberalism and the prosperity of their country before personal prejudices on social or religious quotums.—l am, etc., TeMPEIIAXCIS.
