GOODWOOD DERAILMENT
TRACK ALL CLEAR AGAIN Thirteen wagons, containing gcucial merchandise were derailed in tho smash near Goodwood yesterday morning. One of tho leading wagons left the rails, and, after being dragged _ over the sleepers for a short distance, finally ran into a small bridge, causing the other twelve wagons to pile up beside tho track. Only two of tho wagons capsized. The scene of the accident was half a mile north of Tumai, only twi? miles away from the previous derailment near Waikouaiti. The breakdown train, which was standing at Waikouaiti at the time, was immediately despatched to Goodwood, and the line was cleared at 2 o’clock this morning. Tho train was pulled back to Waikouaiti, and the derailed wagons left there. The extent of the damage has not yet been ascertained. During the night the goods traffic portion of the line was suspended. Tho through express from Invercargill to Christchurch was held up, but arrangements were made for tho transfer of passengers, mails, and luggage to a relief train, which left Goodwood two hours behind the scheduled time. Tho Christchurch-Tn-vorcargill express was also held up, the relief express arriving in Dunedin at 6.20 p.m., nearly two hours late. Tho Limited express loft Dunedin at the scheduled time, 11.20 last evening, and was delayed at Waikouaiti for one hour. Two specials • were despatched from Dunedin early this morning to relieve the accumulation of goods at Waikouaiti.
As yet, railway officials are completely” in the dark as to the cause of either derailment. An inquiry will probably be field.
