CAVERSHAM TRAMS
~ TO TUB EDITOR. Sir, —Quite :t lot of correspondence has appeared in your columns dealing with , the management, ..or rather-mis-management, as- it appears, to : us, of the local •■tramways.. Caversharn residents in particular arc penalised in more than one instance. Normally the service is a ten minutes one, and no shelter of any kind is provided at the terminus, which means that patrons have.to stand wailing in the rain while in other, suburbs they have , a shelter and scats. Another imposition is tlio charge of 5d on Sundays from Caversham" to Frederick street for. three sections. This is hot in’ keeping with other runs, nor is it equitable. On other lines a minimum. 2d faro . is charged at special' rush times, enabling those travelling, the full distance to get just a chance of obtaining a foothold on their car. Cars on this line are ridiculously overcrowded at regular times, and it is often quite inn>oss)blo to even get on to stand. Yet there are always plenty of cars standing in the sheds. if they arc not all “ crocks,” where does tlio sense come in? It is no pleasant journey to Caversham on those crowded cars, paying the maximum fare to stand and lie pushed about by a conductor who has to push and fight his way through to collect fares, followed shortly after by the evor-exper.-tant inspector, again upsetting things just as wo have managed to grab a strap or someone else to hold on to while this readjustment is going on. in short, we would like to see the management’s honest reply .to tlio following common-sense questions:—Why no shelter at Caversharn terminus, aa at others? Why no .minimum faro car to Caversharn when it is often closely following a “ Glen special ” (which is the Id' section), as in other cases? Whv i.s not a transfer issued to passengers travelling oast the Exchange on "Sunday, instead of making them pay Gel to Gardens? Why is an honest' attempt not made to improve the unreasonable and unfair overcrowd-in''-?—T am, etc., Ratepayer. July IT.
