OBITUARY

MRS PANKHURST Pres* Aaaociation—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, June 14. The death is announced of Mrs Lankhurst.—Australian Press AssocutiouUnited Service. MRS EMMELINE PANKHURST. Those who remember the tactics of the militant suffragist campaign in Great Britain a decade ago will recall the prominent part played by Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst. The Pankhursb family has had a tempestuous career, for her three daughters—Sylvia, Adela, and Christabel—have taken as prominent a part as their mother in the suffragist movement, while the father, the late Dr Pankhurst, was a great and devoted Labour politician. Many people in England believe that the cause of women’s suffrage would never have been won had it not been for the militant movements started by Mrs Pankhurst. Certainly there was a touch of genius in the enterprise, hopeless as it apparently was at the time. Passionate, emotional devotion was the main attribute which Mrs Pankhurst brought to hear on the fight, and she and her little band adopted all sorts of subterfuges and expedients to bring their cause before the loading politicians of tli© country, oi to cause the public to think of the fight for women’s freedom. The Government of tho day found the position a difficult one, for its members were never free from the possibility of some attack on their person, Those days are over and past. The fight is won, and women now stand shoulder to shoulder with the men of England in voicing their opinions at the ballot box. Miss Christabel Pankhurst became a mystic, while her sister Adela went to Australia, keeping her Labour ideals. The third sister —perhaps greatest of all —Miss Sylvia Pankburstj fought a great fight for Labour in tho East End of London.
