Tho most severe cyclonic galo that has been experienced for years swept the coastal areas, causing heavy damage to property in tho suburbs and raising terrific seas along the const, greatly delaying coastal and overseas shipping. Most of tho former are sheltering. Tho small coastal steamer White Hay left Sydney hist night for Lake Macquarrie, and after battling for hours with tho storm was driven ashore, and is a total wreck at Morna Point, Stockton Bench, near Newcastle. Tho pilot steamer from Newcastle tried to reach tho White Bay, which was quite helpless in tho teeth of a galo raging at tho rate of eighty miles per hour, but was forced back. A rocket brigade then tried to reach tho wreck, but failed. The latest advices state that a body has been washed ashore, and it is believed to be that of one of the crow.

The gale, which is still raging, has caused widespread damage in the suburbs, houses being unroofed and windows smashed. Telegraphic and telephonic communication has been interrupted, while many of tho low-lying districts are flooded. On the harbour a .number of big steamers dragged their anchors, but fleets of tugs averted a disaster. At Newcastle the gale struck tho dry with terrific force, causing heavy damage. A man viewing the storm came into contact with a live rite which had been blown down, and was electrocuted.
