OBITUARY

MRS MAHSOH A Press cablegram from Sydney announces tho death of Mrs Manson, wife of Mr William Manson. Mrs Manson was tho eldest of the numerous family of the late Mr Joseph Braithwaito, who was for a term mayor of Dunedin, and she was born in this city. As a child she showed a special aptitude for music, and trained on as an accomplished piano player. But it was as a singer that she became known to the public generally. Her first teacher in vocal work was Mr C. N. Bayertz. Subsequently, she studied under Mr Burns-Walker, and made her debut in a Liedertafol concert in Choral Hall. In continuation of her studies she went to England soon after her marriage to Mr William Manson (then in Charles Bcgg and Co’s, employ), and in the Old Country took lessons first from Signor Panzani, then from Sir Charles Santloy. She got on so well as to secure engagements at leading concerts, singing as Miss Mabel Manson, tho New Zealand soprano, and her successes in England lasted until she and her husband came out to reside in Sydney about three years ago. She is survived by her husband, who is the manager of the H.M.V. Gramophone Company in Sydney. Her only son, William, was appointed a professor of tho Royal Academy at tho age of eighteen, but was killed in France on his twenty-first birthday. Mr and Mrs Manson paid a visit to Dunedin about eighteen months ago. The members of her family still in Dunedin' are Mr Percy Braithwaito, Mr Rewi Braithwaite, and Mrs Olive Trembath. Mrs Manson’s death was startlingly sudden. The cablegram to her brother, Percy, states that she was out shopping when seized by a cerebral haemorrhage. Mr Manson will be deeply sympathised with by many Dunedin friends.
