GENERAL DEGREASE

IN HOSPITAL BOARD'S LEVY AMOUNTS DUE FOR COMING YEAR Levies on local bodies for the year 1928-29 were made by the Otago Hospital Board yesterday afternoon. The required formal resolution fixing tho amount of the levies was made, the levies for last year being given in parentheses in tho following tabic;—

The amount is duo from the various local bodies in quarterly instalments, falling due on June 3U, August 31, November 30 and February 28. Interest at tbo rato of 6$ per cent., as decided by the Minister, shall be payable on an amount owing within fourteen days from the date of such levy or part of it becoming due. Dr Valintino wrote that ho had considered the board’s letters on the question of estimates for the year 1928-29, and ho still adhered to his opinion that the board had made an over-estimate oven if only to a slight extent, of its requirements. However, ho was recommending tiio Minister to approve the estimates in view of the fact that the amount of reduction which he would feel justified in insisting upon would not ho very great, and the levy was a trifle less than last year. “At the same time 1 must point out that the method of compiling estimates with a view primarily to the levy is not tho correct method, and in 'the long run does not lead to tho most economical results,” stated the Director-General. “Tho whole spirit and intention of tho Act is that a board should make as close an estimate as possible of its requirements, ami should endeavour, by every means in its power, to adheio to such estimates. The view expressed in your letter that if an . over-estimate lias been made of your requirements it can always bo adjusted tho following year is by no moans tho proper attitude to adopt, and in this connection I must point but, to prevent any possibility of misunderstanding next year, that 1 shall under no circumstances recommend tho Honourable tho Minister to approve your estimates unless a'n estimate is made of voluntary contributions with subsidy thereon approximating at least to some extent the average received therefrom in the past two or three years.” “Take no notice of it,” suggested Mr D. M'Lennau, and the board merely received the letter.
