In the House of Lords, in committee on the Franchise Bill, Lord Newton moved an amendment to clause 1, fixing the age of now voters of both sexes at twenty-five instead of twenty-one. He said he feared the day when the Labour Party might say: “ Let us take the vote from all people above fifty and bestow it on bright young things of fourteen and fifteen who are properly schooled in Communistic principles.” The amendment would keep the number of voters within manageable limits. Viscount Cecil opposed the amendment, as it would destroy the Bill. Lord Gainford said there was no demand for the Bill., .The matter should be left to the existing electorate at the General Election. The Lord Chancellor urged the House not to kill the Bill by. passing the amendment, which was negatived by 87 The committee stage has concluded. —Australian Press Association-United Service.
