Vice-Reg At. The Governor-General and Lady Alice Fcrgusson visited Stratford today, and were accorded a public welcome by the mayor and the representatives of the various public bodies. Their Excellencies lunched at St. Mary’s Private School, and afterwards met the pupils of the primary and technical high schools. They also visited the hospital.—Press Association Telegram. A Wellington Association message states that Mr G. P- Newton, Assistant Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs, has been appointed Undersecretary, in succession to Mr Hislop, who retires on superannuation at the end of this month. Mr J. D. Marks, of Wellington, is spending a few days in Dunedin. Mr V. S. Jacobs left by last night’s express for Christchurch. A friend of homo missions in connection with tho Methodist Church of New Zealand recently offered four prizes for essays on ‘ Tho ElToct of the Doctrines and Polity of tho Methodist Church on the National Life of New Zealand.’ There was keen competition, and tho results are now announced. The first prize was won by the Rev. W, B. Scott, of the Cargill Road Methodist Church. The other positions were filled by the Rev. A. B. Chappell, M.A., now on the staff of the New Zealand ‘Herald,’ Rev. E. W. Hames, M.A., and Miss Irene Hobbs. Mr Chappell is regarded as one of Now Zealand’s most brilliant essayists and article writers, which makes Mr Scott’s success all the more meritorious.
A Melbourne Press Association cable announces the death of Mr Henry Michael Collins, for thirty years manager, and also one of the founders, of Reuter’s, Ltd., in Australia. A London cable states that the presentations to-night at Court will include the New. Zealanders Mrs Charles Morice, Mrs Charles Richardson, Miss Mary Richardson, Miss Arny Levin, Miss Sybil Levin, Miss B. A. Holmes, Miss L. M. Williams, and Miss Mary Rutter. . Arrivals at the Lxcelsior Hotel include Messrs W. J. Hobson and J. G. Portey (Wellington), Messrs W. J. Wills and H. W. Kerr (Christchurch), Mr J. Scoon (Milton), Mr H. J. Tibbetts (Alexandra), Misses A. C. Perrin, P. M'Qneen, M. Hamilton, L. Henderson, and P. Pilcher, Mesdames Handysidc, J. K. Garret, S. G-. McDonald, C. F. A. Jones, and Hall-Jpnes (Invercargill)..
