DUNEDIN WINTER MEETING

TRAINING NOTES

[By Sx. Clair.]

One of the most interesting gallops at Wingatui this morning was a run over sTx furlongs by Overhaul and Wingatui, which took Imin 20sec. Overhaul, who has built up well since racing at Timaru last month, had the best of the finish, but Wingatui’s rider had a big saddle, and appeared to carry tho more weight of the two. Stringbow was given a schooling lesson tins morning at Wingatui, but shaped very badly. After climbing over the sod wall at the top of the straight, Koreraata was called in to <nvo him a lead over the brush double m front of tho stand. Stringbow jumped the first of the double, but ran off at the next, and no persuasion from his rider or trainer could induce him to jump tho second fence. He will require » great deal more schooling in tho hunting held before he can bo considered a steeplechaser. Apple Dighton, who has lightened up a great deal since racing at tho autumn meeting, was schooled over three hurdles this morning, taking Imin 18 3-ssec for the run. He jumped very cleverly, and was always going easily within himself. With a view to providing more room for visitors and trainers on tho official stand, the committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club has cut down the Press stand to a frontage of 7ft llin, and fenced the pressmen in with a high partition, so that they cannot be disturbed in their work. No doubt the change will bo appreciated by both tho owners and visitors. Lochella has developed lameness in tho shoulder, and as negotiations to purchase Wharncliffe have fallen through, C. Christie’s trip to Australia this winter can definitely bo considered off. Black Duke, who has been handicapped at 271 b above the minimum at the Auckland Meeting, is not to make the tiip north, and will do his racing at Wingatui at the winter meeting. . Despite his rehandicap of 91b for his win on the second day of the Wanganui Meeting, Hymestrason is likely to start a hot favourite in tho Trial Hurdles should he corao south for the meeting. Outside of Red Heather, who goes well for a mile and a-half, the field for that race is a weak one. Peter Marion is suffering from a sprained fetlock, and has been scratched for all engagements at the winter meeting. The remainder of Trilford’s team is likely to bo at the meeting. . ~ ~ The committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club has decided to provide a tan track for summer use on tho outside of the new grass tracks, next to tho railing on tho course proper, the tan is to bo laid on the grass, and experiments alreadv made on the course proper have shown that the tan does not interfere with tho growth of the trrass. This track will be appreciated by trainers, particularly in a dry summer like the past has been, and will no doubt save many horses that are tender oo their legs at this time of tho voar.
