NORTH-EAST HARBOUR NOTES

The Orphans’ Chib held its first meeting for the year last Thursday, Mr H. Shurrock in the chair. There was a good attendance, and after the business had been dealt with members spent an enjoyable hour or two with musical items, to which most of those present contributed. The following were elected office-bearers for the ensuing year:—President, J. Vivian; vice-presidents—H. Shurrock, W. H. Timms, and D. Andrews; committee— B. Childs, F. Dawson, and L. Hellyer; stewards—L. Kellett, B. Hellyer, and J. Forrest; musical director, J. Niven; secretary and treasurer, W. H. Timms. A fair number braved the elements on Saturday night to attend a dance organised by the Ladies Committee of the Ratepayers’ Association. These functions lately have become popular with dancers, and the ladies are to be congratulated on the results of their efforts. Mr W. Riddell acted as M.C.

The annual meeting of householders to elect the new committee for the year for the North-east Harbour School was held on Monday evening, Mr J. M‘Donald presiding over a good attendance despite the inclement weather. The outgoing committee reported that during the year the school had been raised a grade, thus necessitating the appointment or an additional teacher, also of the transfer from the Bay of Air R. Luke, who had been head master for several years. The committee wished to place on record its appreciation of Mr Luke’s work and to welcome his successor, Mr Blick. The school building had been practically remodelled and an up-to-date heating system installed, also the cliff overlooking the Main road had been fenced off. The result of the proficiency examinations must bo considered very satisfactory when it was noted that out of twelve candidates ten were successful. The committee also wished to ihank those residents and others who had assisted in different ways at the picnic and competitions, the Orphans’ Club for its Christmas tree, and the judges who had given their services gratuitously at the competitions. Tn moving the adoption of the report Mr M‘Donald made reference to the fact that if the average attendance could bo slightly increased the school would bo entitled to another teacher, which would be greatly to the advantage of the scholars and the present teachers. Mr Blick, head master, in briefly addressing the meeting, also stressed the need for an extra assistant, and it was to be hoped, he said, that parents would remember this and help all they could. The following were elected members of the committee for the year: —Messrs W. Milward, A. Scott, G. Ferguson (re-elected), and Messrs G. Rowley and Busby. Subsequently Mr Bewley was elected chairman .and Mr Milward secretary.

A movement is afoot to start a troop of Boy Scouts at Macandrew Bay. This suggestion is creating no little interest locally, and more will shortly be heard about it. Those interested and desirous of learning particulars should communicate with Mr Perritt, of Cosy Dell, who will be pleased to supply any information. The residents of Macandrew Bay are well catered for in the way of amusements, and doubtless there are many who enjoy a picture entertainment. This evening will see the restarting of these, which_ will be shown weekly during the winter.
