CHARGE THAT FAILED

Following Sir Leo Chiozzar Money’s evidence, the magistrate stopped the case, which he dismissed, awarding £lO 10s costs against the police. Sir Leo Money gave evidence that ho had known Miss Savage for eighteen months. She was of unquestionable reputation, and was engaged to be married. They frequently went to theatres together. On the night mentioned in the charge they bad dined in the West End. They then walked to the Park, and had been sitting in adjoining chairs for ten minutes when a plain-clothes policeman appeared and suddenly made tho charge. They were roughly handled en route to the Police Station. The Magistrate said the explanation of the police why they had failed to obtain available evidence failed to satisfy him. Anyway, ho could not help thinking that in such cases the police in charge of stations should send reports to headquarters for the consideration of the Commissioner. If that had been done the present case would not have been brought.—Australian Press' Association.
