EBB AND FLOW
THE CHINESE STRUGGLE NORTHERNERS AND NATIONALISTS ENGAGED Preia Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SHANGHAI, April 12. (Received April 13, at 11.30 a.in.) Unconfirmed reports state that the Nationalist forces are falling back on Nanking before a Northern onslaught. Following anti-Nationalist successes in the Kiajigsu province the Nanking Government’s troops are recrossing the Yangtse southwards .seeking shelter in the walled city of Nanking. Sounds of gunfire are reported to be audible from Pukow (the Yangtse terminus of the Pukow-Tientsin railway). The reports of heavy fighting between Chang Tso-Lin’s and Chiang Kai-Shek’s armies in the vicinity of Hsuchowfu following the lannchment of an offensive by the Northerners arc apparently confirmed, though the permanency of the Northern victory is questionable.— Australian Press Association.
