GRAIN AND PRODUCE

Messrs Donald Reid and Company, Ltd., report as under;— Oats: Odd samples are now coming to hand, but merchants are not displaying much eagerness in their offerings. The absence of any outside inquiry is no doubt the primary cause of the slackness. On a oasis of shipping value, A. grades are worth 2s lOd. and B. grades 2s 7d (sacks extra) on truck, country_ sidings. Wheat: Harvesting is not yet general in this district, though a few early crops have been cut in Otago Central, and threshing is also compiencing in that district. The yield is reported good, both in quality and quantity. Millers are not displaying much keenness in purchasing, Tuscan varieties especially being neglected. Fowl wheat is still being obtained from last season’s stocks at prices equivalent to 6s 6d per bushel (sacks extra) ex truck.

Potatoes; This market declined still further during the week. The demand is by no means large, and the tubers coming forward are not yet ripe, and also in some cases touched with blight. These facts have all contributed towards weakening the market, and potatoes in large sacks are selling to-day at £o per ton (sacks extra) ex store. Chaff: The local market is bare of supplies at present, but values do not vary to any extent. Canterbury is the principal source of supply, and prime quality from that quarter is realising up to £5 5s per ton (sacks AsjfeeJ ex truck, Dunedin.
