ST. KILDA COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The first monthly meeting of the St. Kiida Borough Council for the now year was held last night. Present were the mayor (Mr R. W. Hall), Grs J. Beattie, G. Gunn, J. Fleming, F. Gillam. H. H. Leary, J. D. M’Curdy, T. D. Roy, G. Stratton, R. Teller, and J. Longworth. Air H. Nyhon, on behalf of the Peninsula drovers, wrote suggesting an alternative route for driving stock to Burnside through the Bay View road and past the brick kiln, into Caversham.—The alteration was agreed to.

A copy of a remit to the Mu nicipal Conference from the Green Island Borough Council urging that the responsibility of the maintenance of arterial road's be borne by the Main Highways Board was received.—ln moving support of the remit, the Mayor said that the St. Kiida Council would not be affected by the alteration, but he thought that the burden should fall upon the public purse rather than on the struggling local bodies.—The motion was carried.

Letters were received from the Otago Football Association stating that it had reached the decision to reievel the surface of Culling Park to make it more suitable for Association football. A second letter from the same body stated that the Management Committee had every intention of executing the agreement of the lease, and asked for a copy of the agreement. The Mayor reported that the lease was ready to be signed. The Medical Officer of Health drew the attention of the council to the unsatisfactory condition of the convenience at Culling Park. He understood that the present one was to be demolished, and urged its immediate removal.—lt was reported that the trustees of Culling Park had agreed to the widening of the corner,_ and the work would be carried out without delay. A deputation of residents of Council street waited on the council and asked that, before the channelling and korbing work was carried out, the width of the street he reduced and provision made for a grass strip in front of the houses.—Mr J. W. Dove stated that as the street would never become an arterial road it need not be a wide one, and it would not be necessary to leave a great deal of room for the parking of'cars outside the hall. —Mr J. Croshie Smith said that there was a propnsal to form an amenities society in the borough, and he asked the support of the council.—Tho Mayor said that a previous council had decided that Council street should remain at its present width, and room must be left for the parking of cars. Attention was drawn to the unsatisfactory condition of Alexandra Park, and the Mayor stated that tho grass would be cur. within the course of the next few days, and the council had ordered a new mower from England.—Tin- matter of reducing the width of Co-ncil street was considered in committee, ana it was decried to leave about two chains of the street approaching the m i<n road at its present widr.n and recline the widvn of the remauidir of the street to 26ft. It was decided that the mavor attend the Greymouth jubilee celebrations, which are to be held from February 25 to March S.
