As the result of assistance from some person or persons outside, two prisoners escaped from Wollongong Gaol. Ihe police found that several bars bad been forced from an iron grille which surmounts the exercise yard wall, making an opening through which a man could easily wriggle. The helper then apparently walked along a short passage to the cells of his friends and supplied a. jemmy, with which the locks ot the doors wore broken. The same instrument was used to force the back door ot the gaol, through which the prisoners gained their freedom. Immediately the authorities were notilied ol the escape all the police stations in the Stale were warned, and the men were later recaptured at. Gosford, nearly lull miles away; Their boots were almost torn to pieces. They said they bad received occasional lifts, but their feet were blistered, and they offered little resistance when discovered.
