CHURCH AND STATE
TENSE FEELING !H MEXICO Press Association —By Telegraph —Copyright. MEXICO CITY, January 28. Renewed conflict between the State anu the church in Mexico in indicated by insurrectionary activities in several States, and rigorous military precautions have been taken, while there have been wholesale arrests of Roman Catholics in the capital and other large cities. The Government charges the prisoners with having plotted against the State. The suggestion that President Galles and Archbishop Guadalajara should meet and st*i a compromise has not yet been approved in either camp, and it is said that the hieracliy will hold out indefinitely in the hope that the Government will come to terms through force of public opinion. The Government, on the other hand, insists upon the acceptance of the Jaws, especially the _ registration _ of priests with the municipal authorities, which the Roman Catholics argue would give tlie control of the priesthood to the State.
