A Press Association telegram from Mastcrton states that the new St. Patrick’s School, which was erected by the parishioners of Masterton to com r memmorate Monsignor _ M'Kenna's forty years’ continuous service as parish priest in Masterton, was opened yesterday by Archbishop Redwood, assisted by Archbishop O’Shea. Shortly after 4.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon fire broke out ifi the Empire Hotel, Napier, a three-storied brick building opposite the post office. Ths outbreak apparently originated at the rear, near the kitchen, and within a few minutes the whole of the top floor was a raging furnace. The hotel was one of between forty and fifty rooms, and the licensee, Air A. _M. Herbert, had only been in occupation for a few months. A number of guests were staying at the hotel, besides several permanent boarders, hut even those who were in the building when the outbreak was discovered did not get clear with all their helongingSj so quickly did the flames travel, whilst practically all of those who were out for the day lost everything. The licensee will be a heavy loser.
