THE MODERN YOUNG WOMAN

TO THE EDITOK. Sir, What makes , “ Business Woman” think that “A.A.H.” has lost any of his jobs through the superior efficiency and adaptability of the young ivoman? Not so. 1 have been employed with firms who have employed from one dozen to two hundred girls. I regret that I cannot quite agree with her 'as. to £heir vast superiority over the young man. Adaptability has not been very pronounced. Some were quite unfitted for the posts entrusted to them. Through stress of times our firm had to makes changes from male to female, and after one year to eighteen mouths had to go back to the young man. In some of our industries a steady hand is essential. We tried tho young woman; it was no go to our firm.

I have had two instances where the young; lady has blundered this week. She did not know the stock that the boss carried on her shelf. In the other instance a girl wanted to charge (in her ignorance) 150 per cent, over the usual amount, and was surpised when I said: “ Oh, Miss, it is only so much.” Anyway, I had to go away without the goods. I have been employer and have been employed, and have had a good knowledge of business entrusted to me. The female who is employed hero in this branch is employed at a much lower rate, and does not show up her capabilities. In Australia young men are employed, and always have been smart and courteous.

I find ‘ 1 Mother of Six ’ ’ rather funny about her “ Goosey -goosey.” Why not keep to the subject sensibly instead of rambling into nursery rhyme? She finishes up with the blame on the man, and says there is no shortage of marriageable males here. We all know that it is the fault of the girl, who won’t entertain the idea of marriage, and man meets with a stern refusal from this certain class akin to my opponent’s ideas. It all goes to show the change that must come about soon. I am quite right in my idea of the decadence of the woman. No mother should have the home neglected, which I presume will happen if all are turned out to earn the bread. If the women are to be the wage earners, what will home, sweet, home become? 1 have four sisters, devoted to home life, who can cook with anyone, and make home to the father and brothers a perfect haven of happiness, and they would not go out to work to take up or pirate a man’s duty or privileges. They say that man must work, and I say so, to. I wonder if “ A Business Woman ” is New Zea-land-born.

H:id modern young women kepi to the tew positions quoted by “Business Woman,” this article would never have reached the Press. They are, in quite a number of instances taking the bread out of men’s months. "Reforms must and will take place within a year or two. The questions of employment will be thoroughly thrashed out. I would invite every modern young woman who is seriously concerned and interested to let father and brother work. We are quite able to keep our sisters as well off as they were in the past. In all fairness cut out the ideas of women’s franchise, women's rights, and all other abortive nonsense concocted by these women agitators. Then the average man will say “Thank you; all’s well.” —I am, etc., A.A.H. January 28.
